I am moderating the support.FS-UAE forum over at the English Amiga Board and answer questions there regularly. Also, updates on current development are posted there. An advantage of posting in support.FS-UAE is that other people may be able to help you as well, and maintaining a longer discussion (if necessary) is easier.

If you have any kind of issue with FS-UAE, you are welcome to create a new thread and explain your problem. It is also useful if you attach fs-uae.log.txt to your post when the problem is related to running FS-UAE.

Hi all,

I got the launcher working as it should with Linux Mint 20.3 (x86-64), but now I upgraded the OS to LM 21.0, and ran into issues. FS-UAE Launcher is starting as usual, but now (with no [config or other] changes at all) I don’t get any Amiga program running. I also can’t find the fs-uae.log.txt, so I don’t have any idea what’s stopping the app from working correctly.

Do you have any hints for me?

Hi I am trying to emulate a parallel port sampling with programs such as Pro tracker, Octamed and Sound tracker Pro 2… is it possible to emulate such device? I found some resources but i am not too sure about it

Hi Frode,

I’ve tested various versions of the version 4 preview over the past six months or so and each time run into the same issue someone mentioned previously with game speed being too fast under vsync. In v3, whenever I set vsync to automatic, it both prevents screen tearing and keeps the game speed as it should be thanks to (I presume) the v_blank functionality kicking in, In the V4 preview, games are sped up to 60hz regardless of vsync being set to automatic and there doesn’t seem to be a way to manually enable the v_blank functionality. Only if I turn vsync off completely and have screen tearing in some games is the speed held at 50hz.

Is there a way of enabling v_blank in v4?

I am trying to use version 3.1.6.3 on a M1 Pro MacBook.
Thank you so much for effort you put in to helping the Amiga live.
I am new to this software, and find that when I try to logon to retro gaming I get an error.
The email and password work when I log on via the website.

I have looked at the log file and this seems to be the relevant section were the error happens.
Hopefully its not me, and this will help find a solution

Hi, I have imported kickstart roms and the ROMS are ticked green but when i select A600 or A500+ from the home page the rom is greyed out,

Hi, not sure i posted in the right place yesterday… same message just trying to cover all bases!

i‘m very new to fsu-ae and I’m having problems getting my joystick buttons to work… I’m using the latest version of the emulator on my macbook running OS X El Cap I’m trying to use a Wico Command Control joystick with a usb adaptor.. the problem seems to be with the buttons as the stick controls are recognised with out a problem, iv tested the joystick with an old amiga and the buttons work fine, even tried a old atari joystick with the same adaptor and the button works fine? both joysticks are recognised as “Ajoy” but even if i try to config the button in settings it won’t even pick up the button on the wico being pressed no matter where i try to assign it? but it will recognise the atari for some reason? i don’t know if its because the wico has 2 buttons attached to the same trigger? iv tried switching one off but this had no effect either.. has anyone had this problem with a wico joystick?

sorry if this isn’t very clear I’m trying to give the most detail i can for things i don’t know much about!

Please support bigger ampunut virtual gfx card memory becouse now i cannot use 2560×1440 32bit what is ny monitor native mode. WinUae supports but has weird pointer problem at least version what i tested.

I am trying to run CD32 games. I have the TOSEC ROMS and I am using the settings from the archive, but all I ever get is “This game variant cannot be started because you don’t have all required files.”

I have tried manually adding the disc and CD32 KS and Extended ROMS, but same result.

In the TOSEC zip files are usually .cue and .iso files. I have tried using each as the disc file, but same error.

Maybe the CD images have had audio re-encoded as mp3/ogg?. It should work if you have all the required files, even within zip files. Alternatively, you can just create a new CD32 configuration manually and select the .cue file in the CD drive selector. In this mode, you need to have the files extracted from the .zip file.

This is a great piece of software and I’m running it on Ubuntu Studio on an 8 year old laptop with no issues!
I might of missed the obvious but is there a Amiga Demobase config I can use FS-uae? I only ask as I’ve tried to set-up Amiga Demobase on my Windows 7 laptop, but with no luck. I’ve a few demo’s and PD games running of FS-uae but would love the full Amiga TOSEC set (minus apps) running on one interface.

I’m I being a bit dumb here 😉

I’m trying to load a cd game to play with an a500 setup, but im not sure how to configure it, I’ve been trying to load the .iso through the cd-rom drive (there’s a .cue also but i’m not sure where to place it) and have not been successful, is there a certain way I need to configure the emulator to get it to load these files?

I Have Big Problem With Fs-Uae 🙁 Why FS-UAE (main window) don’t work with 2x2GB RAM onboard? But Works Properly With 1x2GB RAM. I Purchased Two New 2GB RAM Memory For Dual Channel. I Can Not Use FS-UAE On Both Memories. FS-UAE-Lancher starts normally. After Clicking Start, Displays The Memory Protection Fault. Both My Memory Are Tested And 100% Correct. Hi Frode, after hours of testing and configuring with the “Custom Input Mapping” function I came to the conclusion that the action “action_pause” isn’t working. Is there a possibility to map the Pause Key to a joystick button ? This would be very comfy to have 😉

Yes, you are quite right that several of the actions listed are not working. The list is based on the available input actions from the WinUAE code -and not all work in FS-UAE. The list should definitively be washed (and action_pause specifically supported too). I just haven’t gotten round to it yet.

I don’t officially support / test with Crunchbang Linux, but it seems Crunchbang is based on Debian, so you can probably use my Debian packages.

Remember to install both the fs-uae and fs-uae-launcher packages (and fs-uae-arcade if you want that) 🙂

Heya. Very nice emulator, it’s great to see a modern and user-friendly Amiga emulator!

I use the OSX version, and there’s one small thing that peeves me. .adf files have the default exec icon. I know FS-UAE won’t ‘run’ an ADF from a double click (like the way VICE does for .tap and .d64 files), but having a blue floppy icon associated with the .adf extension through FS-UAE would be nifty. Maybe there might be a way to also load the double-clicked .adf file into df0: or add .adf files to the swap list if multiple are selected?

Hi I’ve been setting up the emulator but just using the internal kickstart. I cant get a single game to load in past the workbench stage, just freezes or never loads anything. I’m on a macbook, is it my lack of kickstart roms? Will buying the value version of amiga forever help? Thanks

The internal kickstart may or may not work with your games. You can try to add more memory to the Amiga and see if that helps. I recommend using real kickstarts, as that’s what people generally use and it is much more compatible with games. Amiga Forever will provide you with the kickstarts you need. The value edition provides ROMs for some Amiga models (inluding the A500 v1.3 ROM which is the most important ROM for gaming). The plus and premium editions contain ROMs for all Amiga models.

HI! I’ve recently discovered your awesome emulator…but I can’t open Launcher.app.

Hi. I know that im off topic but i would like to know if you know something about it otherwise it wouldn’t be a problem.

I’m trying to let FS-UAE work with Hyperspin Frontend.
I tried to let FS-UAE (Amiga cd32) work outside the frontend and i’m able to do it but when it comes to let it be ran in hyperspin it doesn’t work and when i select to play a game it prompts amigaDOS.

Do you know if there is someway to fix it and to let it work with the frontend or is it not yet compatible?

The problem is that the following options are set via command line arguments:
amiga_model = A4000/040

Command line arguments override options from config file, so the amiga model is set to A4000/040, not CD32. So you must do something to fix this – either change A4000/040 to CD32, or drop it altogether 🙂

Hi, I’m operating FS-UAE off of a Mac Book Pro. The one game I am eager to get it to run is an old Gremlin Gfx game called Harlequin. Remember it? Purely nostalgia having nearly derailed my GCSEs with it during childhood.

I’ve found various ADF files (downloaded) but I just can’t get it to work. There’s 3 disks and I have an emulator loaded. Basically, I can never get past the prompt screen for ‘disk 1’ if I’m using the intro disk. Or prompt screen for level disk if I’m using ‘disk 1’ which seems to double up as a launch disk. I have 3 disks loaded in the drivers, in order, but it just won’t switch itself, or let me switch manually. Thought F12 did this?

Any help / suggestions would indeed make my Sunday! Thanks all, Chris

Hi Frode, I really appreciate your work with FS-UAE. I have been using it on and off and have now during paternity leave take up an(other) old hobby project – put together an old A1200 case and Keyrah V2 so I can get more Amiga feeling when running FS-UAE.

Keyrah V2 supports displaying the LEDs for Floppy and Hard drive activity with the use of Scroll Lock and Num Lock (i.e., when Scroll Locks is enabled Keyrah will light up the Floppy LED). Now, is there any chance it would possible to get

1) Scroll lock to light up when a floppy is accessed
2) Num lock to light up when a HD is accessed

If so, would be happy to post back pics/video of a cool setup 🙂

FS-UAE is awesome! I’ve long since sold all my Amiga hardware, content to use the emulators instead. Recently UAE on my Linux distro went unmaintained. FS-UAE is working great for me in Arch x86_64, and I freaked when I heard the simulated floppy drive click sound. Just wonderful; thanks so much!

Hi.

The emulator front-end looks great running on OSX, however it won’t launch any games for me. I’m getting this crash:

Hallo, i’m using this software on ubuntu and it works great.
But i have also some original cd32’s cds, but i can’t use phisical cdrom as amiga device.
Also original cd has multitrack, so i can’t play cd music when i use iso image.
Can i use directly my cdrom?

Greatest Ami emulator for linux i’ve seen so far! Using it since 8 hours, and i’am amazed with it’s stability, clear look, compatibility (great support for HDD dir and HDD file). And was really suprised, You have explained all details about refresh rate on nvidia in LinuX. It looks like all in one place to make You happy :D. You did really fantastic Job! Thanks a lot!

thanks for the nice emulator.
Perhaps you know of the (now dead?) “GameBase Amiga” project (gbamiga.elowar.com). Their database contains ca 5000 Amiga games with information and screenshots. It would be nice if these games and information could be made available in the launcher (the db is MS Access, but can be converted to csv files with jGameBase (sourceforge.net/projects/jgamebase)).

Is it possible to install workbench 3.1 OS to a hard file? I tried loading the 6 disks in select multiple files. After the first 4 disks it tells me to insert the next disk.
I push F12 and menu window appears but need I to middle click to use mouse. Nothing happens.
Is there something I need to do to enable the floppies to swap?
will I have to do this with a manual config. file without the launcher?

Hi,
I am trying to find the names of 3 Amiga games I used to play when I was a kid, can you help? I will try my best with the descriptions:

Game 1
In this game you controlled a jeep which fires rockets and has the capability to jump. The game is a rolling 2D platform type.
The jeep was green.

Game 2
You controlled a kid in this game. 2D platform game. I remember that on one part of the level you used a bubble gum machine so that you could float up the level. On part of the game you could also get on a bicycle.

Game 3
In this game you were in a ski lift having a gun battle with a character in the next ski lift. You also and to avoid sticks of dynamite.

    Oh, and by the way, game files for Amiga is generally not be called “roms” (the exception would have to be CD-ROMs), as the games came on floppy disks which are re-writable. ROM stands for read-only-memory of course 🙂

Hi – am having trouble having “fire” recognised. Running 2.2.0 on Mac OS X 10.8.2, and the fire button on my USB Speedlink doesn’t make it to the games. I can see it’s working (as button_1) in the joystick setup screen, but pressing it has no effect on any games.

I did discover that if I attach an old ADB keyboard with an ADB-USB converter then left-command will always be recognised as joystick fire, even when the port is set to the speedstick, but that’s less than ideal.

Is there anything can be done to help here? Thanks.

I’m trying to get FS-UAE running a CD32 under Mac OS X 10.8.3. I have bought Amiga Forever and have imported it so the CD32 emulation starts up okay (I get the Amiga CD32 logo and start up music) but when I insert an original CD32 game disc nothing happens. I would have expected the game disc to start so I can play the game. Am I doing something wrong? Help!

      5. Create a folder with the name of the game and drop the ISO disc image in. Copy the files from the CD32 audio disc into the same folder.
      6. Open Textedit and create a new file.. In the Format menu select Make Plain Text.
      7. Copy the text below ‘Cue file format’ into Textedit and replace everything between with filenames from your game folder. Repeat the last three lines for each audio track in the folder making sure you update TRACK 04 AUDIO to the appropriate track number. Save the file in your game folder with a .cue extension.
      8. Right click on the game folder and select the Compress option to make a zip archive.
      9. Start up FS-UAE Launcher. Create a new configuration and select ‘Amiga CD32’ for Amiga Model. Select the game zip archive for the first CD-ROM drive.
      10. Stick Start and the game should load in an emulated CD32.

Importing kickstart roms (navigation) has a minor bug on Kubuntu 12.10 AMD64.

Navigate to the folder the roms reside inside and click open, marks the homepath of the user
/home/user and not /home/user/some/path/to/roms

if you navigate to /home/user/some/path/to/ mark roms and click open, this works.

On OS X the Kickstart import functionality in the launcher is broken in 2.2.0. I can’t import any Kickstart files. Consequently the emulator doesn’t run. If I choose Import Kickstarts from the drop down menu, the rom is copied to the Kickstarts directory, but the Launcher still says that there are no Kickstarts. Clicking the triangle with the exclamation mark doesn’t do anything at all. And ideas? Thanks a lot.

Not being able to click on the warning is a bug though, thanks for reporting it. It works on other platforms. I’ll fix that for the next version (it doesn’t do anything other than opening the import kickstarts dialog).

I’ve installed FS-UAE 2.0.1, and everything is working fine, but with games that have more then two disks, i can’t get the game to work, i’ve tried everything. Do i have to go in to custom settings, and enter the floppy disks there?

It is a wonderful piece of software, but lacks any import/export option from Amiga to the host computer! Basically it is just a Amiga player for games. It is also cannot read directly the CD-Rom (only images). For example on my Amiga Forever CD I have some Amiga programs that aren’t inside a disk image and I cannot run them. Also if I have some hardisk images and there isn’t any way to export the data from them.

Hi, Happy New Year!!!!

I have installed FS-UAE and played a few games in single player…
As this program can’t simulate two persons on one keyboard I’m looking into getting 2 good usb gamepads or joysticks. Which joysticks are compatible with FS-UAE?
I have a macbook pro late 2010 8GB. Please give me a few examples. I’m after non-analog sticks as I’m not gonna run flight simulators 🙂

Hi, Dear Sir! I was looking for a usable Amiga emulator on Ubuntu, and I almost gave up, when I discovered this masterpiece yesterday. The GUI, the ease of use, the “feeling” is great and my daughters couldn’t stop playing with this. 🙂 But my main purpose was to watch demos. Most ADF’s I’ve seen ran smoothly, but with some AGA demos (Nexus 7 by Andromeda) I experienced some slowlyness, specially with sound. Maybe graphics were slower too, but when music starts to slow down … it is a bit awkward 🙂

I made tests with a 3.1 Kickstart emulating an Amiga 4000 (040), all default settings on Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit, Intel Core2Duo 2400 MHz CPU with 4 GBs RAM. I tried on Windows 7 as well, but similar results. So my question is: is it possible that my PC’s specs are too low for this emulation, or I should change some settings … what do you think?
Other than that … I am amazed!

It runs with variable speed – should run as fast as your system can emulate it, there are some unresolved issues with it. I got the same problem as you with this demo, and will use this to test the A4000 emulation.

To get the demo running nicely, use A1200 instead! This model runs with a fixed number of cycles. A1200 emulation is more demanding than A4000 because it runs in cycle-exact mode for better accuracy. You can lower the accuracy (and thus turning off cycle-accurate mode) if your computer struggles to emulate A1200 at full speed!

Also, on Ubuntu, make sure you don’t get performance problems due to compositing managers, see http://fengestad.no/fs-uae/performance.

Hi, very impressive work here! One question though: I am using a basic amiga 500 config with kickstart 1.3. I have tested loading workbench 1.3.3 (which works) – however, i have not been able to use the cursor keys when using workbench. Is this a known issue? Thanks

Yes, this is a common issue 🙂 -The cursor keys are used for joystick emulation. Either set joystick port 1 to “nothing”, or insert host device “none” into it, or plug in a real joystick.

You can also change these settings while running FS-UAE from the F12 menu.

How exactly do I get software to the AMIGA side? For example, if I want to install LHA and INSTALLER, I would download those from Aminet, but how do I proceed from there, as they do not come on ADF which I could simply pop into a floppy drive…? I’m on OS X btw.

Discovered this the day before yesterday and am just so impressed. Huge Amiga fan here and used to enjoy WinUAE for a while but was alwasy annoyed by all the setup, the “having-to-read-into-it” factor. It’s impressive how they create such compatibility and emulate virtually every aspect of the old systems, but for people looking to just enjoy their old favourite games it’s a pain to get into.

This is where FS-UAE makes a great and important difference, and what I think is its unique feature other emulators do not offer in the same way. Thank you.

I think this “configuration convenience” aspect you have is what you should focus on to further distinguish your project. I read somewhere you had plans for a game database which I think is a great thing to do. Perhaps it could be coupled with ideal configurations to run the games as smooth as possible. So just let people choose which game to play and have the emulator use the right configurations file automatically, as well as mounting all the discs, etc. What you have now is still too manual, even if it’s MUCH better than WinUAE.

Please add an option in the installer if all of FS-UAE’s files and folder structure is added to “Documents”, “Install Dir” or “user specified” location. Fragmenting the emulator and its files across different locations is just confusing.

Can’t wait to see this project progress in the future and I hope you’ll stick to your gaming focus.

Lastly a stupid question: What is the “launcher” ?! When I read about it I was hoping maybe some new menu would pop-up to guide through more auto-config, but the emulator was the same? Guess I’m missing something.

Okay, so I figured I should’ve deleted my default configurations file first. WOW! This launcher is fantastic and full of potential.

Two thoughts:

(1) Make it possible to resize the window without icons disappearing (I’m using a 4:3 screen and could barely fit the launcher in width-wise)

(2) I’m using someone else’s machine and the IRC chat just used the computer’s name, which is not my own. Perhaps a pop-up what alias to use before it connects to the channel?

Overall, this is really seriously awesome and looks like I will spend quite some time with this.

When I talk about game database, I really mean a game configuration database, a long with a set of game information (name, year, screenshots, cover, publisher). So the point is to be able to start games easily, not to compete with “Hall of Light” to become the ultimate Amiga game information database 😉 Early support for this already exists, see:

Much work needs to be done to make this feature more accessible, and contributions from other people are needed to maintain such a database, so better tools needs to be written to facilitate a distributed effort among many people (this all depends on whether enough people are interested in contributing to such a database, of course).

Regarding the window size, what is your screen resolution? It is currently designed to require a minimum screen resolution of 1024×600.

The Launcher net play / IRC feature works as it is now, but it still needs more GUI to make it more accessible. While not difficult to use if one reads the documentation, I plan to make GUI for creating / joining games and starting an online game session. The same applies to net play related settings, such as nick names -GUI for this is planned (You can, for now, specify the nick through “Custom Settings” in the launcher -from the rightmost toolbar icon). Because the GUI for this is not 100% complete, I will disable / hide the net play feature in the launcher (by default) for 2.0, so new users will not be confused by the lack of GUI and mistake it for a finished feature.

Regarding files and folder structure, I will reconsider the structure at some point, but now right now, though I think the split between program data and user data will be kept also in the future, and I’m a bit skeptical to “bother” users with this question when running the installer. I lean towards trying to make sane defaults and rather make it possible for users to make changes if they don’t like the default. It is possible already to override where FS-UAE stores/reads user data, but it is not documented good enough. I plan to update and improve the documentation after releasing 2.0 (and make it more topic-based).

But perhaps I can make another download option for Windows – a zip file with FS-UAE and FS-UAE Launcher, pre-configured to run in “portable mode”…

  I’ve read through your documentation(s) so I’m aware you can look up some settings files in folder xyz and edit them in a text editor to get something you want (IRC nick, default folders, etc.). I think the point is that nobody wants to do this. You seem to be advanced at creating GUIs with good usability, and like I said earlier this is your forté. You should keep the “convenience in config” focus.
  
  I’m excited to see what happens when netplay is fully implemented. Have you ever heard of http://ggpo.net/? It’s a netplay service for arcade beat-em up games using the final burn emulator. They have a really advanced anti-input-delay mechanism based on save-state guessing as far as I understand it. Just thought I’d share this.

Hello, Frode.

I just learned about FS-UAE. I haven’t loaded or tried the emulator yet, though it looks like a nice project and wish you all the luck with it. Maybe I’ll try it some day when I have more time.

One thing I can comment on, after reading through some threads, is the difference between your relation with FS-UAE users and that between Toni Wilen and WinUAE users. I have been banned from that forum just for speaking my mind and eventually stating the fact that everybody there has to suck up to him (and they do). It is a very sickly master-slaves (worshipers) relationship they have there. Whereas you seem to have a healthy relation with the users, treating them on the same level as yourself, as in you-need-them-and-they-need-you and as in every other project I know of. Perhaps Toni will wise up now that he has some competition once more (remember the Fellow project?) 😉

Features WinUAE has which FS-UAE does not have are typically features which need platform-specific code, such as the ability to use native CD-ROMs directly (via Windows APIs), Catweasel support, and a bunch of other features it has accumulated throughout the years. I have until now mostly focused on features which can be easily coded once for all supported platforms.
    
    Of course, for Linux / Mac OS X users, choosing FS-UAE should be much simpler choice since UAE/E-UAE has not been actively maintained for many years.

I’ve really enjoyed using fs-uae on my MacBook Pro. One strange thing I’ve noticed is that I have to enter the full path to the Kickstarts (/Users/blah/Documents/….), but I can get away with using an abbreviated path to disk images (~/Documents/….). Not a show-stopper, just some strange behavior. I encountered this while using the launcher, not with fs-uae itself. I have absolutely no problem with opening any config file from the Finder. It’s only the launcher that requires me to use an absolute path for the Kickstart.

Is there any way you can run FS-UAE so that you can pick any game you want to play without using the config file ?

It also has initial support for game browsing / game database -and automatically creating game entries based on scanned recognized floppy files (just remember that it is still under development, so it’s not “perfect” yet).

FS-UAE (the emulator) itself does not have a setup GUI and/or game browser, and this is intentional. The idea is to let FS-UAE do what it does best, and let users set it up via FS-UAE Launcher. I am also planning to complement the suite with a third component, a full-screen game browser for FS-UAE usable with game controllers.
