Also, due to changes in SDL2, some controllers (Xbox controllers at least) have new IDs and the bundled controller mappings no longer match. It is especially recommended for macOS users to upgrade, as this latest version fixes some annoying issues on recent macOS versions.

Compared to previous downloads, FS-UAE Launcher.app no longer contains an embedded FS-UAE.app. Therefore, you need to download both of the .dmg files above and place FS-UAE Launcher.app and FS-UAE.app beside eachother, for example in the /Applications folder. I haven’t had time to fix builds of FS-UAE Arcade yet.

There are also macOS_ARM64 builds available for the 4.x development snapshots. If interested, please see this forum thread for links and more information.

The short answer is that it is possible to build a working version for M1, but I don’t yet provide official builds due to not having access to the hardware. There has also been reports about joystick/gamepad devices not working on M1 hardware with FS-UAE 3.0.5. I have created newer builds – available here for now: https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=105950 – which are reported to fix the issue 🙂

The guide was written to use Bars and Pipes with MIDI hardware, but should work with other Amiga MIDI software as well.

Disclaimer: I haven’t tested the guide myself.

Note: If all you want to do is to play back MIDI tunes, for example to use FS-UAE to play Sierra games with MT-32 music (using an MT-32 emulator on your host computer), you should wait until FS-UAE 3.9.x arrives, which should support this use case on all platforms via the portmidi library.

(Bottom line, no support is removed from the source code. I just want to maintain less build environments).

Road ahead:

I’ve already started the work on next development series. The biggest change is updated emulation core from WinUAE 4.2.1, which brings with it new features. But I will be looking at other improvements as well. If the stable series is to boring for you, stay tuned for v3.1.0dev 🙂

In short, the default scaling/cropping behaviour has changed (though you may not see the change if you have specified certain scaling options). Also, the FS-UAE menu itself is being changed so it will work better on non-16:9 displays (not complete yet).

  • Moved additional game databases to a separate settings page.

You need to re-run the file scanner (and game scanner) when updating to this version.

Regarding the favorites functionality, there is no UI to add/remove favorites in the the Launcher/Arcade yet. But you can filter by favorites. For now, favorite games can be added/removed at https://openretro.org/user/favorites and the launcher will sync down this list when updating the game database.

Notes for the portable packages:

  • The structure of the portable versions for different operating systems have been unified somewhat, and the versions are also able to share a lot of data files. You may want to remove the old program directories when upgrading to the new portable version.
  • If you use the portable version, you should also delete the any FS-UAE Launcher[.exe|.app] or FS-UAE Arcade[.exe|.app] executable / script in the root folder. The new ones are called Launcher[.exe|.app] and Arcade[.exe|.app], and are – for all operating systems – simple “shortcut executables” / scripts. New in this version is that all the “shortcut executables” pass any arguments to the real programs.
  • Portable.ini is no longer a 0-byte file.
  • OS X Note: The .app bundles in the portable version are not self-contained, so you should not drag these to the Applications folder or similar. Use the non-portable version instead for this!

This is the first release where I have published 64-bit (x86-64) binaries for Windows, OS X and SteamOS. These have been tested fairly little compared to their 32-bit counterparts. So please report any issues specific to these versions if you find any. Note: 64-bit QEMU-UAE plugins for Windows, OS X and Steam OS are not publised, but CAPSImg (IPF support) is available.

The new x86-64 JIT compiler is available and enabled in the 64-bit versions. There is a dedicated support thread for this at http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=79762. The JIT compiler is enabled with jit_compiler = 1 (use for example with the A4000/040 model). If you want full speed for floating point operating, you also need to enable the option uae_compfpu = 1 for now.

Known issues:

  • For full (FPU) JIT speed you need to manually enable uae_compfpu = 1.
  • Windows (x86-64) portable version uses 32-bit “shortcut executables”.
  • Portable x86-64 versions should be able to co-locate with x86-versions.

For Windows 10, this driver should already be installed and the controller should work out of the box.

For OS X, you need to install an unofficial driver, such as the open source Xone-OSX driver. Alternatively, you can install the 0.15 preview version (or newer) of the improved 360Controller driver which incorporates code from Xone-OSX, and also supports Xbox 360 controllers. Please note, I do not take any responsibility for your use of unofficial drivers!

On recent Linux distributions, the Xbox One controller should work out of the box 🙂

As far as I know, you need to connect the controller via a Micro-USB cable on all platforms, due to Microsoft using a proprietary wireless protocol.

This version fixes a bug which causes a crash in FS-UAE on Linux with recent official NVIDIA drivers. Windows and OS X users do not need to update (and I will not provide updated builds for those platforms either). Source code is available here: http://fs-uae.net/stable/2.4.3/.

Many thanks to NVIDIA which actually tracked down the bug in FS-UAE! The problem was an unused function (mprotected), a legacy from older WinUAE code, which was exported and caused the NVIDIA drivers to load this function instead of the correct one from libc. I’m quite impressed that they contacted me with information about the bug, and I think this shows how serious they are about their Linux drivers 🙂

The latest development versions are not affected by this problem (the function has already been removed, and also, symbols are no longer exported by default).

These packages are very new, and should be considered experimental.

The naming is a bit misleading, the requirement isn’t really SteamOS, but rather the Steam Runtime! This means that this version should run on any Linux distribution where Steam (or Steam Runtime) is installed. Please report if the packages are not working on your Linux distro 🙂

This package can be particular useful if FS-UAE packages are not available for your Linux distro (or if only older versions are available). The SteamOS version will also probably be used as the base for a new Linux portable distribution (similar to the Windows and OS X portable versions).

This distributions contains updated version of all requirements for FS-UAE and (almost) all requirements for FS-UAE Launcher & Arcade, including a Python version compiled with mingw. The end result is a build environment which is much easier to set up and use. I even made an easy-to-follow step by step tutorial for installing this environment and compiling the git version of FS-UAE on Windows. But, there is always a chance that the changes have introduced bugs in FS-UAE or FS-UAE Launcher, so please let me know if something which worked in 2.5.20dev is broken in 2.5.21dev.

The OS X build environment has also been updated with newer library versions – so same here, please report any new issues in 2.5.21.dev, if any.
